Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to determine the optimum gliding speed during flight from thermal to thermal.... A good rule-of-thumb could be derived: Under good thermal conditions and negligible wind the optimum sink rate outside the thermal is almost half as great as the experienced climb rate during thermal flight.  Flying at the optimum sink rate is equivalent with flying at the optimum airspeed.....
